Kempower is one of Business Finland’s Veturi companies, and it leads the Heavy Electric Traffic Ecosystem, HETE. In FORECO, it takes part as an industrial partner, bringing HETE as a live environment where collaborative foresight is put to the test. The aim is that a shared view of emerging opportunities and challenges prevents decisions on charging power, grid capacity and data sharing from being made in isolation.
Anticipating the future of heavy-duty transport
HETE works on three barriers that keep heavy transport on diesel: charging power in the megawatt class, roughly ten times typical passenger-car DC charging; grid capacity that does not exist today at depots, ports and terminals; and a missing data layer that would let fleet, grid and charging operators plan in step with one another. No single company can solve all three by looking ahead alone.
Inside the consortium, Kempower works with VTT as coordinator, LUT University and the University of Turku on the research side, with RISE in Sweden and Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt in Germany as international research partners, and alongside ABB, Tamlink, Meyer Turku and the AI specialists HeadAI and Fibres Online. The mix of sectors is deliberate: Meyer Turku brings marine, ABB power electronics, and Kempower the HETE ecosystem for heavy-duty transport electrification. Each is planning for a transition none of them controls.
Turning shared knowledge into action
“Our key challenge is to combine distributed knowledge about future market needs and industry developments in ways that support concrete decisions. We are exploring how foresight can help HETE partners align their priorities and proactively shape the future of heavy-duty transport electrification.”
– Amir Safdarian, PhD, Research Project Manager, Kempower
Kempower expects to learn as much as it contributes. The consortium is working towards a set of shared foresight tools that partners actually reuse, and a playbook for running foresight across an ecosystem rather than inside a single company. The harder question is governance: what can companies that compete in some markets and supply each other in others safely put on a shared table?
Strengthening long-term competitiveness
In the long term, FORECO can shape how HETE partners plan technology and infrastructure roadmaps together while the market is still forming. Roadmaps are cheapest to align before they are set.
This work was carried out in the FORECO project, supported by Business Finland.
